AGM and End of Season Draw This Friday

On Friday 25th November the Monarchs Fans Trust will hold its second Annual General Meeting in the bar at Armadale Stadium from 7.30pm. We will review the last year, summarise the various activities the Trust has been involved in and present the current financial situation. The plans and suggestions for 2017 will also be discussed as we try to build on the successes of the Trust. All members are welcome to attend and we hope to see many of you there, this is your chance to get involved, express your opinions and influence how we move forward. The membership is the most important part of the Trust and we hope you can help us build a positive future.

At the end of the meeting we will make the draw to find out the prize winners for the End of Season raffle, including the £500 first prize. Full details of the draw and other prizes can be found here. There is still time to enter the raffle, if you have any sold tickets please return them to us by the start of the meeting. If you have tickets to return and not able to attend please contact a committee member or the mailbox as soon as possible so we can arrange to collect. You have to be in in it to win it.

Fans and Club Fighting to prevent Monarchs Washing Away

It’s been a strange summer in the east of Scotland with some absolutely beautiful days and some not so great but what has almost been guaranteed is if it’s Friday it is normally raining! This is having an almost disastrous effect on Edinburgh Monarchs Speedway who have had 8 matches postponed and several more adversely affected by the weather already in 2016. Speedway riders can’t see if it’s raining or race on waterlogged tracks so despite the best efforts of the promoters and the volunteer track staff there has only been 3 meetings (out of 10) raced at Armadale since 3rd June.

Every postponement is a 4 figure loss to the promotion and with 9 away fixtures in the same period the cash flow situation of the club has gone from bad to worse and almost to the point of no return. In actual fact if it wasn’t for the support of the innovative fund raising activities the club and its supporters fulfil every week it would be past that already. The Monarchs 100 bridge walk that Scott Wilson and Derek Wilkinson have organised this week is the latest of these and the likes of the MSSC, the Grand Draw, Edinburgh Speedway Videos and others are fundamental to the club. It was recognised 2 years ago that this was still not going to be enough to ensure the future of speedway in the east of Scotland so the Monarchs Fans Trust was set up to help.  The Trust has worked hard raising funds and trying to spread the message of speedway in Scotland. The principles of the Trust are to secure the long term future of the club and to help stabilise the finances of the club and it is the latter that is more pressing concern at the moment. The chairman of the Trust Scott Somerville has been attending board meetings of the speedway club and presented a pretty stark position to the committee who immediately agreed to a £7,000 donation in addition to the regular £1,000 monthly contribution in August. This is the 2nd time this summer the Trust has donated extra funds and brings the 2016 total contribution to a staggering £22,000. This does not answer the question of whether or not it is enough and the committee will continue to monitor the situation and donate more when required, there is still money in the coffers but this was a significant percentage of the Trust funds.  Full financial details will be available at the AGM on Friday 25th November.

What is clear is that for Edinburgh Speedway to survive the support need to get right behind the team, with rain affected matches bringing lower than average crowds it is paramount that fans turn up in numbers to support the boys. The team have still been successful on track and have some big nights coming up in the form of two visits from nearest rivals Glasgow, a double header with Plymouth and Redcar, current league leaders Somerset and Peterborough bring Monarchs legend Craig Cook back to Armadale. The team are looking good to qualify for the play offs so this should be a very exciting end to the season and the defence of the Premier League title is still a very realistic target. With large crowds bringing back the spirit of 2014 and 2015 it could still be a great year for the Monarchs on the track. Off the track there is harder work ahead but the Trust will do everything it can to ensure there is an Edinburgh Monarchs in 2017, the supporters have backed the Trust superbly so far and with their assistance it can be done but everyone has to get behind the Club right now! Starting with tonight for what looks like a gloriously sunny Friday night at the Speedway.

Nice Weather for Ducks but not Speedway Racing

Tonight was the 2nd night of our Kids Go Free voucher that we distributed across West Lothian at the start of this month. Unfortunately the meeting has been cancelled because of the adverse weather conditions. Speedway is an exciting sport but it is just too dangerous for the riders to compete when the track is so wet after we have had so much rain. We will discuss options with the club about using the voucher on another date and will publicise when we have details.  Thanks to everyone who used the vouchers last week and we hope to see you all at the speedway again soon.

Ryan Fisher’s Big Night

Tonight at Armadale we take a break from normal team meetings to celebrate the testimonial of Ryan Fisher, it looks set to be a great night with many old faces there on the night. Some of which are even going to take to the shale as William Lawson, Andrew Tully, Charlie Ermolenko and Billy Janniro dust off the kevlars for rare appearances on a speedway track in the UK.

Ryan is an exciting rider who wears his heart on his sleeve and always gives 100% effort, he was at his peak during his first stint with the Monarchs when he was a key part of the team that won many honours between 2008-2010, most of the 2008 championship winning Monarchs will be there tonight. It is great to have him back in the team this season and everyone at the Monarchs Fans Trust wishes him a great evening and congratulates him on all he has achieved in speedway so far. We hope there are a few more highlights to come before he retires back to the USA, maybe even towards the end of this season.

Good luck Ryan and keep Flyin’.

Take 4 as League Defence Kicks off on Friday

The Monarchs Fans Trust will attempt to present the £5,000 cheque to the club for the 4th time this season on Friday night when the Workington Comets come to town. The only home meeting that beat the weather so far this season was the home defeat to the Berwick Bandits, as per usual the promotion and in particular the track staff did a fantastic job to make sure we got through the meeting and got a result in such difficult conditions. Rain threatened all night so the races were pushed through quickly with no track grading and not much time to fill in your programme never mind present a cheque on the centre green. The other two matches were both called off well in advance of the start time so we try again this week. As before if you want to be involved in the presentation get in touch with the mailbox or Greer Finnie on our Facebook page.

This has been a hard start to the season with the riders not getting the opportunity to ride and get going properly but that didn’t stop us winning the return fixture on Saturday at Berwick. Again the conditions were far from perfect but Jye and Dan both picked up their first points in Monarchs colours and fantastic to see flyin’ Ryan Fisher at his best. It was great to get the banner out as the team did a lap of honour at Shieldfield.

Here’s hoping for better weather this Friday.

Trust Helps Kick Start the new Season

This Friday (weather permitting) we will get what we have been waiting for all winter, the Border Roofing Monarchs on track in competitive action. It will be the 30th season in a row that the Edinburgh promotion will bring the Monarchs to the tapes, this is a fantastic achievement and we are lucky to have them. The Tricentennial trophy will be presented to the match winners on Friday in their honour. They will be the first to say that the community spirit of the fans has helped make this possible in many ways and on some occasions they couldn’t have survived without them. The Trust is now firmly part of this community as we enter our second season supporting the club.

The Trust has made good strides from our inception in February 2015 with some 137 members joining us. The Club ultimately had a neutral year financially last year but by no means was this without its challenges with many sources of funding over and above gate receipts being utilised to help pay the bills e.g. Grand Draw, Edinburgh Video, Sponsorship, Transfer and Trust monies. The Trust contributing a very sizeable £12,000 to the survival of the Club in 2015.

If 2015 was challenging then 2016 will prove even more so, the Club will not have all the same funding streams as last year at its disposal e.g. it won’t have the transfer monies from the sale of Max Fricke. So we as a Trust are under no illusion about the job being done. Far from it we have a way to go before achieving our ultimate aim of the long term future of the club. The beginning of the season comes with many bills so we thought it prudent to help the Club kick start the year by committing £5,000 of Trust funds towards these costs, including likes of a new Ed The Monarch suit and new Club Shop.

This cheque will be presented to the club on Friday night and we will also continue to donate £1,000 per month towards medical costs, starting at the end of April. If you would like to be involved in a cheque presentation then get in touch with our mailbox or with committee member Greer Finnie on Facebook.

Earlier this week it was announced that the Plymouth Devils are closing despite agreeing to run in 2016.  This is a very timely reminder of how fragile the existence is of the vast majority of speedway clubs. We are very privileged to have so many members donating towards the Trust and ultimately to the survival of the Edinburgh Monarchs. The Club and the Trust Committee cannot that you enough.

Friday will also see the supporters banners in use for the first time at the speedway, join in and get involved as we get right behind the 2016 Edinburgh Border Roofing Monarchs. It will be a big challenge for the team against a very strong Belle Vue Aces including 7 time British Champion Scott Nicholls alongside 3 former title winning Monarchs: Stevie Worrall, Max Fricke and Craig Cook. It will be strange to see Cookie line up in white in heat 1 at Armadale but this is what we have been waiting for and it’ll be even better to see Kevin, Erik, Ryan, Jye and Dan in the blue and gold. Ricky Wells and Theo Pijper stand in for Sam and Max in what should be a good night’s racing. 2, 4, 6,  8 ….  you know the rest, see you Friday!

Monarchs Banners Unveiled

A large turnout of Monarchs fans helped unveil two massive banners at Armadale tonight. These were donated by a Monarchs fan and the Trust hopes that this will add colour and a little extra atmosphere to the build up of Monarchs fixtures. On a cold and gloomy March evening it was fantastic to see so many people there to support this venture and we thank you all for coming along. We were also very pleased to be joined by Monarchs team captain Sam Masters who is acclimatising back to the Scottish weather ahead of the new season.

The intention is that the home banner will be displayed during the parade at Armadale although it is also capable and sturdy enough to be set as a permanent fixture within the stadium. With Fans Trust chairman Scott Somerville conducting this was moved along the 3rd and 4th bend tonight as we got an idea of what it might look like on the 1st April when the Belle Vue Aces are in town.

Both banners have the same design with 5 stars representing the 5 league championship wins. The 2nd banner whilst just as large is a lot more lightweight and flexible enough to be folded into a normal sized back pack. This will enable us to carry it up and down the country to away meetings and make sure the presence of our fans is felt and the home team know the mighty Monarchs are in town. Away wins are what separates the good teams from the rest these days and we hope this will spur the boys on to great things in 2016. A point demonstrated on the night by Scunthorpe who recorded the first away win of the Premier League season in the first match. All things going to plan the Away Banner should make it’s debut at a track not to far from you soon as well.

We would like to emphasize our thanks again to everyone who turned up to support the event and give special thanks to Ron MacNeill for coming along to take photographs and to Sam for making an appearance too.

Unfortunately there wasn’t a huge amount else to see on the night as fog made visibility poor across the stadium from the start; it only got worse as the night went on which inevitably led to the abandonment of the greyhound racing after the 7th race. We would like to thank Billy Cochrane and all his team at Armadale Stadium for allowing us to use the facilities again, facilities they continue to make gradual improvements to.

Next time we are at Armadale there will be the familiar smells and sounds of speedway bikes in the air and it is now only 7 days away! As the banner says this club has been going (with a couple of gaps) since 1948 and the Trust will continue to work hard to try to improve all aspects of Monarchs speedway as we strive to make sure the club lasts another 70 years and beyond.

Fans Trust going to the Dogs

greyhound1-1On Thursday night we will be at Armadale Stadium for the unveiling of a new initiative for the Monarchs Fans Trust and Edinburgh Speedway. This will be during the regular Thursday greyhound racing night where a race on the night will be named after the Trust. We thank the Cochrane family for this and for allowing us to use the stadium again, they have been very supportive to us. On the night we will present the prize to the owner of the dog that wins the race, if you would like to be involved in that please let us know. All you need is a hearty handshake and winning smile.

First race is at 7pm and there is a £6 entry fee, we hope to see many of you there. It will allow us our first glimpse of the track this year as Ronnie Anderson, Doc Bridget and all their fantastic helpers have already been in and working hard on it. They are looking for volunteers this Friday during the day (from 9am until mid afternoon) if anyone has some free time to help out I am sure it would be appreciated. They are also looking for assistance on Press and Practice day which is now only 10 sleeps away, details on the official Monarchs website.

Monarchs Fans Social Event With a Twist

ArmadakeStadium

The Monarchs Fans Trust is holding a social event open to all Monarchs Fans on Thursday 17th March 2016 at Armadale Stadium. The regular Thursday night Greyhound racing will be on and we are looking to encourage as many people to come along for a pre-season catch up.

However, there is a twist… we need as many of you to turn up as possible as we need a hand to unveil a colourful new initiative (donated by a Monarchs fan) that will be on display at the stadium. We probably need a minimum of 50 people to help. We believe this is a Club first and is a colourful and interactive initiative.

It would be great if as many of you attended. Everyone is welcome regardless of whether or not you are a member of the Trust.

Entrance fee to the racing is £6.
Gates open 6pm.
Racing starts 7pm.
